Access Denied — What To Do

If you land on /access-denied, YND OS is telling you that your account doesn't currently have permission to view the page you tried to open.

Why this happens

Every page in the sidebar is tied to a set of allowed roles (see /help/permissions/how-access-works). You'll get Access Denied when:

  • Your role(s) aren't on the list for that page, and
  • You haven't been granted that page through a permission set, and
  • You aren't an admin or executive (those two bypass everything).

Note: The Access Denied screen does not tell you which role or permission set would fix it. That's a known limitation — don't spend time guessing from the screen itself.

What it does NOT mean

  • It doesn't mean the page is broken.
  • It doesn't mean your account is broken.
  • It doesn't mean the data doesn't exist — it means your account isn't allowed to view this page, specifically.

Steps to resolve it

  1. Confirm what you were trying to do. Note the exact URL or the sidebar item you clicked.
  2. Check the access matrix. Look up the page on /help/permissions/page-access-matrix and confirm which roles are allowed.
  3. If your role should have access: contact your manager or an admin — your role assignment on /admin/users may be missing or incorrect.
  4. If it's a one-off need outside your normal role: ask an admin to grant you a permission set for that specific page via /admin/permission-sets, rather than changing your role entirely.
  5. If you're an admin/executive and still denied: this shouldn't happen — treat it as a bug and escalate to engineering rather than troubleshooting further yourself.

A common trap: reaching a page anyway

Some pages aren't in anyone's sidebar but are still reachable by typing the URL directly, because they aren't gated yet (see /help/permissions/known-gaps). If you were able to open a page you don't think you should have access to, that's not a sign the system is working correctly — please flag it rather than assuming it's fine.

Example

Danielle (CSR) clicks a bookmarked link to /pricebook from an old training doc. She's redirected to /access-denied, because Price Book is only available to door_expert, design_concierge, manager, and executive. She checks the access matrix, confirms CSR isn't listed, and asks her manager whether she actually needs Price Book access for her role — if so, a permission set is granted; if not, the bookmark gets removed from the training doc.
